How To Disable the Windows Log On Dialog Box

Stop Windows 95/98/Me from nagging you for a password when starting your computer.

You can stop Windows from displaying the log-on screen at startup, provided you aren't using user profiles to allow custom settings for multiple users.

Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.

On the Configuration tab, click to select Windows Logon in the Primary Network Logon box, and then click OK. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click No.

In Control Panel, double-click Passwords. (If you canceled the network log-on dialogue box when you started your computer, the Change Passwords tab may not be available. You must log on so that the Change Passwords tab is available).

On the Change Passwords tab, click Change Windows Password, select any of the check box items that you want, and then click OK.

In the Change Windows Password dialogue box, type your Windows password in the Old Password box. Leave the New Password and Confirm New Password boxes blank, click OK, and then click OK. Click the User Profiles tab and verify that the "All users of this PC use the same preferences and desktop settings" option is selected.

Click Close. Shut down and then restart Windows

Should you still get the pesky log-on, do this:

Click Start, point to Find, and then click on Files or Folders. Type *.pwl in the Names box, select local hard drives in the Look in box, and then press Enter.

Right-click each of the .pwl files, one at a time, choose Rename, and then rename the file with an .old file name extension. Shut down your computer, and then restart your computer.

If you don't disable the .pwl files, the passwords associated with those files may be detected by Windows and the Windows Logon prompt may continue to nag.

Q:    Control Panel & Illegal Operation

Dale: As of this morning, I'm again having the problem of opening control panel and getting the message that it has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. Any thing I can do at this end to rectify the problem?

A:    Control Panel & Illegal Operation

Control Panel is part of the Windows operating system.

Fist run Scandisk

Second shut down and restart your computer

If all else fails, then reinstalling Windows is probably what you need to do.

Q:    Recover Deleted Files

I'm not sure if you can help me, but I have heard that there is a way to

achieve files from your computer that you have deleted or accidentally

closed. If you can help me in any way I would really appreciate.

A:    Recover Deleted Files

By default when you delete a file it is moved to the Recycle Bin.

Until you permanently empty the Recycle Bin then you can Restore anything that is in the Recycle Bin.

If you have already cleared the Recycle Bin then the items are gone if not open the Recycle Bin and select one or more files and From the Menu Bar choose File, Restore.

There are companies that will recover data from your hard drive but they are very expensive.
