E-mail questions we get from readers.
Q: Junk E-mail.
Hi Dale--Is there any way to block out the ads sent via E-Mail? It's getting
ridiculous. I finally managed to stop the telephone solicitations and now there
is a bigger problem
with the Net.
A: Junk E-mail.
We all get a lot of junk email. Just like surface mail.
If you are using Outlook Express for your email then you can, to some extent, block certain email. Trouble with this method is that you block some and then new junk comes in. So it is probably just as efficient to simply delete any mail that you don’t recognize the sender. That is what I do.
Q: Printer Problem-Fix or Replace?
My printer (HP722) seems to be on the fritz. I think it's about five years old. I have always been able to fix any problem with it, but not this time---should I just go and get a new one, based on the age?
A: Printer Problem-Fix or Replace?
Printers are relatively inexpensive. Labor to fix printers is expensive.
Since your printer is over 5 years old you would be better off getting a new printer as opposed to fixing the old one.
Q: Remove Windows Password Dialog Box?
How do I get rid of the Password box that pops up every time I start Windows?
A: Remove Windows Password Dialog Box.
Here is how to get rid of that pesky password box at startup.
One of Window's better features is that one system can maintain personalized desktop settings (screen savers, wallpaper, sound effects, etc.) for different people. To accomplish this, a log-on dialog box asks for each user's name and password. But if you later decide to keep your personal computer to yourself, and you switch back to the "All users of this PC use the same preferences and desktop settings," you may find you're still prompted for your name and password each time you load Windows--irritating.
To kill the dialog box, just open the Control Panel and double-click on the Passwords icon. Select Change Windows Password. Type the current password in the Old Password box and leave the New Password box blank. Click on OK, and the next time you enter Windows, you'll get right in.
Q: Electrical Problem
When I shut down my computer the right way, I have difficulty in starting up the computer again. I have checked all fittings and even switched outlets. I have by-passed the surge protector and that does no good. It seems as though the fan is running but not the computer itself. Finally after shutting on and off many times it will eventually start up. I would appreciate any help you can give me on this problem.
A: Electrical Problem
From what you described, it sounds like an internal electrical problem is occurring.
Maybe it’s time to take Mr. Computer to a repair place.
Q: Priceline.com is it worth it?
Oh, another question. Know of anyone
using the priceline.com for groceries at Winn Dixie? Is it worth it? That
might be a neat survey question for the newsletter or email letter. :)
