May 2000 Potpourri

This month we will share some of the E-mail questions we get from readers and others.

Q. I'm running Windows 98 w/Outlook5. When I receive a letter in my Inbox and open it, why can't I edit it. Sometimes the letter are scattered all over the place and before I print it I would like to have it, at least, resemble a letter

A. The answer is not hard.
Select the email you want to edit and then hit reply.
In the reply window you can edit and then send or copy or whatever.

Q. I have a report 1500 lines long and each line in one column has a number (each different).  When I sort that column it sorts like this:  300, 301,399, 3021, 3044 3200, 400, 401, 4201.  What am I doing wrong?  I want them in cronological order.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

A. Without seeing exactly what you are doing I will offer the following:

By default sorting is numbers then letters..
You can sort A to Z or Z to A..
You may be sorting by the wrong column to achieve the results you want.
Tip: Before you sort insert a column to the left of column A. Then number each row of your spreadsheet or database. That way you can always get the data back to its original order by sorting on that column.

Q. Question or Problem: our a drive does not work.
when the pc is turned on the lamp on its face comes on and stays on as long as the PC is on. When we insert a disk we cant access it we get a error message that says can not access the drive... ??? its a new drive we recently purchased.

A. 3 1/2" A: Drive is not working and the light stays on.

1. Uninstall then reinstall the drive.

2. Replace the drive if this doesn't help.

3. If necessary go into Setup and tell your computer you have an A: Drive and what capacity it is.

4. If the drive still doesn't work you may need to take your system to a computer repair shop and let them correctly diagnose the problem

Q. How to Transfer WordPerfect disc info to MS Works

I have a lot of data stored on a 31/2 floppy disc that is in WordPerfect 5.1 format. My new computer does not have the WordPerfect software installed. I would prefer to NOT copy all this data over into MS Works, which I have on this computer. Is there a way to transfer the existing WP 5.1 data over to a WP Works format so I may henceforth modify the existing data using MSWorks ?Thank you for any help you may offer.

A. In MS Works Ver 4.0 and above, you can import WP 5x.

What you will do is open and save the WP documents from the Floppy Disks.

You may need additional 3 1/2" Diskettes if the ones you have the original files on are full.

A. Dear Gamer, No suggestions. Need a lot more information. But you may not have enough DOS memory to run the game.
